Agnes Tirop, a top Kenyan athlete, was discovered dead at her home.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed police to conduct an expedited investigation into the death of Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop. Tirop, a member of Kenya’s Olympic team in Tokyo in 2021, was discovered dead with stab wounds on October 13, 2021, at her home in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County. Kenyatta referred to her as a Kenyan hero and champion.

Tirop’s decorated performances include a World Cross Country title in 2015. Tirop set the new world record in the 10km road race after clocking 30:01 during the Adizero Road to Records event in Herzogenaurach, Germany on September 12, 2021. Bahrain’s Kalkidan Gezahegne then lowered that record during the Giants Geneva 10km in Geneva, Switzerland, setting a new world record in 29:38 in a race in whihc Tirop was second.
