President Edgar Lungu says he will engage the Bank of Zambia -BOZ- on the need for financial institutions to extend more financial support for long term investment in the agriculture sector .
President Lungu wondered why Banks in the country are willing to support long term projects in the energy and not in the agriculture sector .
He however says government will continue investing in the development of the water and energy sectors as the two are key to the economic development of the country .
President Lungu says the construction of dams do not only benefit commercial but also small-scale farmers.
The head of state said this when he toured the Macadamia plantation in Vumbwi District of Eastern Province.
President Lungu said what he has witnessed at the plantation is testimony that farmers can make more money by growing high value crops.
And Italian Ambassador to Zambia Antonio Maggiore said agriculture is one of the key areas of corporation between Zambia and his country .
He said very soon a team of Italian investors will be in Zambia to explore investment opportunities in the sector .
And Andrea Bizarro a shareholder in Lasacco Limited Company thanked President Lungu for putting in place polices in the agriculture sector.
He said the policies are contributing to the growth of the sector .
Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Micheal Katambo said efforts by government to promote crop diversification among the farmers are bearing fruits .
Mr. Katambo said government will provide support to small scale farmers involved in the growing of high value crops.
