Seven men and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested in a series of raids by officers from the Victoria Police gang crime squad after six people were stabbed at a Melbourne CBD party.

Key points:

  • Seven men and a 16-year-old boy were arrested in police raids and are expected to be charged
  • Police said the incident was not “gang-related” but involved members of gangs
  • Six men were stabbed when a fight broke out at a short-term rental property on Monday morning

Police said some of those involved were part of street gangs but “the motivation was not gang-related”.

The men were injured when a fight broke out at a short-term rental property on Spencer Street in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police said the fight broke out in the apartment and then moved to the building’s foyer.

There were about 50 people at the party.

An injured 19-year-old man from Dandenong North who had walked to Southern Cross Station flagged down police for help at around 2:30am.

Five other men suffered non-life-threatening stab wounds, including two men who went to hospital in Melbourne and three others, all aged 17, who went to hospital in Werribee.

Police earlier said nine people had been injured, but it has since been determined that three of them were involved in a different incident.

The incident is related to tensions between individuals, police say

Some of the men were already known to police, said Detective Superintendent Peter Brigham.

Those arrested have been questioned and police expect to lay “a number of serious criminal charges”, including affray, today.

Detective Superintendent Brigham said the fact the men were carrying knives was very concerning for police and it was lucky no-one was killed.

“[We] think this is a unique, one-off event that relates to tensions between individuals rather than tensions between gangs,” he said.

“There’s such a fine line when someone gets stabbed and when they can be fatally wounded. Thankfully in this case their injuries were not that significant.”

Police are still looking for one person in connection with the incident.

Detective Superintendent Brigham said police understand the “immense public concern” around events like this because they want to feel safe in the CBD.

Warrants were executed at 11 properties in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs early this morning.

Those arrested include:

• A 19-year-old Langwarrin man

• An 18-year-old Dandenong North man

• A 20-year-old Cranbourne man

• An 18-year-old Clyde North man

• An 18-year-old Dandenong North man

• A 19-year-old Dandenong man

• An 18-year-old Doveton man

• A 16-year-old Pakenham boy
