The United Nations Development Program -UNDP- and the Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- have launched the Democracy Strengthening in Zambia project worth 13 point 2 Million Dollars.
UNDP Resident Representative LIONEL LAURENS says the aim of the project is to help promote peaceful, credible, transparent and free and fair 2021 general elections.
Mr. LAURENS disclosed that over 10 point 3 Million dollars has been mobilised so far towards the project, including contributions and pledges from cooperating partners like the EU, Germany, Ireland, USAID, UK and France.
And Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- Chairperson ESAU CHULU said democracy strengthening in Zambia project will assist in strengthening the electoral system in the country.
Justice CHULU said to hold credible, transparent, free and fair elections requires a multi-sectoral and multi-institutional approach.
And speaking during the launch, Minister of Justice GIVEN LUBINDA assured the cooperating partners that next year’s general elections will be credible.
Mr. LUBINDA further called on Zambians and other key stakeholders to support and work with the ECZ in its quest to provide credible general elections.
He said government is determined to see to it that next year’s general elections are transparent, peaceful and free and fair.
And European Union Ambassador to Zambia JACEK JANKOWSKI said the Union will continue to support free and fair elections.
Meanwhile, National Assembly Deputy Speaker CATHERINE NAMUGALA said elections should be every citizen’s business.
