UPND Choma Central Member of Parliament Cornelius Mweetwa has been suspended from Parliament for 30 days with effect from today April 8th, 2021.
The suspension follows Mr. Mweetwa’s conduct in which he brought into question the character and impartiality of the speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini when he featured on a Television Programme on Prime Television on March16th, 2020.
Making a ruling on the matter this afternoon, second speaker Mwiimba Malama explained that Mr. Mweetwa as a long serving MP ought to have known that statements that reflect on the character of the speaker are impermissible.
Mr. Malama said the Choma Lawmaker while on a programme titled “Oxygen of Democracy” on Prime television accused the select committee which over saw the affairs of Bill 10 of 2019 that it was trying to use the backdoor to get legitimacy of Bill.
Mr. Malama stated that in accordance with section 28 subsection 3 of the National Assembly powers and Privileges Act, during the period, Mr. Mweetwa will not be allowed to enter the precincts of the Assembly and the National Assembly motel.
He also explained that Mr. Mweetwa will not be allowed to participate in any activity of the Assembly or any committee that he may be assigned in his capacity as a Member of Parliament until May 7th.
