Zambia has shut down social media services following a large voter turnout.

As millions of Zambians went to vote today, all popular social media platforms in the country became inaccessible.

Facebook, Zambia’s most popular social media platform, went down shortly after midday, followed by Twitter and WhatsApp.

Only Signal is accessible through a Virtual Private Network.

Many social media users were taken aback by the unexpected shutdown of social media networks at a time when information sharing was crucial.

Both ZICTA and the Zambian government could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.
